Chapter 16: Haircoloring, pages 617-620, Milady Cosmetology School Theory. (14th edition of the Milady book)

*key points:
• law of color= system of understanding color relationships

•color wheel= illustrates the rules and guidelines of color theory (a visual aid)

•primary colors= pure, fundamental colors (BLUE, RED, & YELLOW)

•all colors are created from these three primary colors

•blue= strongest primary, adds depth and darkness to colors, is the only cool primary color

•red= medium primary, adding red to blue-based colors will make them appear lighter while adding red to yellow-based colors will make them appear darker

•yellow= weakest primary, adding yellow to other colors will make the color appear lighter

•when you mix all three primaries together in equal proportions you will get a gray color

•Natural brown= 1 part blue, 2 parts red, & 3 parts yellow

•secondary color= obtained by mixing equal parts of two primary colors
(Red + Yellow = ORANGE, Yellow + Blue= GREEN, Blue + Red = VIOLET)

•Orange, Green, & Violet are your secondary colors

•tertiary color= made by mixing equal amounts of a secondary color and its neighboring primary color
(Yellow + Orange= Yellow Orange, Red + Orange = Red Orange, Red + Violet = Red Violet, Blue + Violet = Blue Violet, Blue + Green = Blue Green, Yellow + Green = Yellow Green)

•Yellow Orange, Red Orange, Red Violet, Blue Violet, Blue Green, & Yellow Green are your tertiary colors

•complementary colors= primary and secondary colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel.

•Red and Green (Christmas), Blue and Orange (FL Gators), Yellow and Violet (LA Lakers)

• complementary colors neutralize each other
example: if you lightened your hair and it turned yellow, you would use something with violet in it to cancel or neutralize out the yellow (think of how purple shampoo works for blondes)

•tone= color balance (warm, cool, or netural)

•warm tones reflect more light (this will make them look lighter than their actual level)

•cool tones absorb more light (this will make them look darker than their actual level)

•base color= predominant tone of a color

•intensity= strength of a color (soft, medium, or strong)
